EDP Baixo Sabor: Iberian Desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) – Construction [2012-2014], Reservoir Filling [2015] and Operation (2015-2020] Phases. EDP. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/mq8rnf accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-11-08.Description
The dataset contains records of Iberian Desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) collected in the river Sabor sub-basin (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) [2012-2020] and the Compensatory Measures Monitoring Program (PMC) [2015-2020] of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys carried out inside and around the area affected by the dam, from June 2012 to October 2020. Sampling was performed in transects distributed along the Sabor river valley and tributaries, in rivers Maçãs and Angueira and in Vilariça stream, up to 132 km upstream (132 km before 2015, and 120 km from 2015-2020) . The presence and identity of the target species were mostly assessed with scats attributable to them and validated, either by the traditional methods (presence of fur) [2012-2014], or by molecular means [>2015]. A total of 215 validated scats distributed by 60 occurrences was obtained, supplemented with an observation of one live individual.Purpose
This dataset is part of a broader initiative and commitment assumed by the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A., which permits to make available biodiversity data collected from infrastructural assessments and biological monitoring studies in the scope of hydroelectric dams’ construction and exploitation.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The data were collected in Sabor river sub-basin, its tributaries and rivers Maçãs and Angueira and Vilariça stream (Douro sub-basin), up to 132 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Vila Flor, Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro, Vimioso, Macedo de Cavaleiros and Bragança.Sampling
Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river, its tributaries and rivers Maçãs and Angueira and Vilariça stream. A total of 80 transects (60 in 2012-2014 and 20 in 2015-2020) was established in the study area. The transects had a minimum length of 200 m and, within this distance, the prospection ceased after the detection of the first confirmed sign of presence of the species. If there were no evidences of presence in the first 200 m the transect was extended to a maximum of 600 m, after which, if the absence of signs persisted, the species was considered as absent in the transect. Each transect was performed on foot, during daytime, by one or two observers, and the riverbed and its margins were carefully searched for signs of the desman’s presence (scats, footprints). Because the position and length of the transects could change between seasons and/or years in function of the prevalent field conditions, only the initial point of each transect was retained in this dataset. All scats found were identified in the field and taken to the laboratory to validation. In 2012-2014 this was performed by the traditional methodology of detecting the presence of the species hair (always present in the scats of this insectivorous mammal): the scats were broken down in water and observed with a magnifying glass. Hair identification was performed with the help of appropriate mammal hair identification guides. From 2015, the collected scats were sent to a certified laboratory to be subjected to molecular analysis with specific primers for Galemys. This method was used in combination with the hair analysis, whenever the results of the molecular analysis were inconclusive.Quality Control
