Version 1.1. EDP. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/k2p54g accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-15.Description
The dataset contains records of birds of riparian habitats (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) and part of the Compensatory Measures (PMC) Programs of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in the areas affected in the reservoir filling phase (2015) and in the initial exploration phase (2015-2020) near the dam structures, between in March 2015 and October 2020. Sampling was performed in selected points located in the banks of the Sabor river, in the reservoir areas around the dams (PME) and in weirs and ponds restored or constructed in the framework of the Compensatory Measures Program (MC2 – “Habitat recovery and Improvement of the affluent streams of the AHBS”). The bird’s presence and species identification were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation, from the margins of the reservoir, or in the vicinity of the structure (weirs and ponds) with the support of binoculars and a telescope. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus levels. A total of 1376 observation events produced 22524 confirmed identifications. The most abundant species (>1000 records) were Phalacrocorax carbo (2749 individuals/observations), Delichon urbica (1332), Turdus merula (1247), Fringilla coelebs (1082) and Erithacus rubecula (1041).Purpose
This dataset is part of a broader initiative and commitment assumed by the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A., which permits to make available biodiversity data collected from infrastructural impact assessments and biological monitoring studies in the scope of hydroelectric dams’ construction and exploitation.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in the area affected by the reservoir filling of Feiticeiro and Baixo Sabor dams, as well as in some affluent streams, in a 1-km buffer centered in the Sabor river, up to 53 km upstream the river mouth, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Mogadouro, Alfândega da Fé and Macedo de Cavaleiros.Sampling
Sampling was designed to cover all the Sabor river stretches affected by the reservoirs filling of Feiticeiro and Baixo Sabor dams (PME), as well as selected ponds and weirs recovered or constructed in a buffer of a 1-km around the river (PMC). A total of 69 sampling points was used. At each point, a 10-minute sampling session was performed with binoculars and a telescope, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. Although an “unlimited distance” method was used, an estimate of the distance to the observer (class of distance) was recorded. Species identification, age and sex determination (when possible) were performed by direct observation and confirmed with appropriate field guides when necessary.Quality Control
All individual identifications were performed by qualified techniciansMethod steps
