EDP Baixo Sabor: Land Birds - Reservoir Filling Phase [2015]

Study Extent

The study was carried out in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for land birds in 1-km buffer centered in the Sabor river, in the new reservoir area, in the vicinity of the dams up to 26 km upstream the river mouth, and in the Vilariça stream, in a length of 10 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo and Mogadouro.

Sampling

Sampling was designed to cover the most relevant habitats for land birds in a buffer of 1-km around the Feiticeiro and Baixo Sabor dam structures in the area flooded during the reservoir filling phase, as well in control points located downstream the Feiticeiro dam (PME) and in the Vilariça stream (PMC). A total of 23 sampling points was used. At each point, a 10-minute sampling session was performed with binoculars and a telescope, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. Although an “unlimited distance” method was used, an estimate of the distance to the observer (class of distance) was recorded. Species identification, age and sex determination (when possible), were performed by direct observation and confirmed with appropriate field guides when necessary.
