Tanzania has the most extraordinary diversity of plant species of all African countries, except the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa. There are more than 14,500 indigenous vascular plants species, out of which about 1400 are endemic to Tanzania. The National Herbarium of Tanzania (NHT), housed under the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA), has approximately 300,000 specimens in its holdings. This herbarium has an established role in providing voucher specimens for plant identification, local and regional Floras information compilation, production of monographic work and a reference centre for botanical research and conservation issues. Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority opens access to this dataset specimens records of 560 of plant species from all eight floral regions of Tanzania, including the Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests. The dataset contains 3141 occurrence specimens’ records of species of Bryopsida (1), Cycadopsida (1), Liliopsida (120), Magnoliopsida (416) and Polypodiopsida (23). The oldest specimen was recorded in 1871 (Olea europaea L.) collected from Ngorongoro Crater, while the most recent records (Habenaria papyracea Schltr.) was collected from around Pangani river in 2019. TPHPA opens access to this biodiversity resource for stakeholders worldwide to enhance biodiversity conservation, research, training and policy making.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
Tanzania and ZanzibarSampling
The call for capacity enhancement focused on the priority species for sustainable utilization of biodiversity. Therefore specimens of threatened, endemic and economically important were identifies, scrutinized for taxonomic and georeferencing information correctiveness.Quality Control
The dataset went through a rigorous assessment to meet Darwin Core Data Standard. Taxonomic and georeferencing information were corrected by the aid of GBIF validator https://www.gbif.org/tools/data-validator and species matching https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup, Flora of Tropical East Africa book, and geo-locate https://www.geo-locate.org/web/default.html.Method steps
- This dataset of the 3141 herbarium sheets of threatened, endemic and economically important species was developed through the following steps: 1. 3190 Specimens were selected from the National Herbarium of Tanzania (NHT) and were Bar-coded. 2. Geo-referencing of specimen records missing grid references was done using an external gazetteer. 3. The NHT specimens' label information was digitized using Botanical Research and Herbarium Management System (BRAHMS), a computer program used worldwide to manage Herbaria collections. 4. Data from Brahams were downloaded into Microsoft Excel spreadsheets using Darwin-Core format. 5. Data cleaning and validation were carried out using GBIF validator https://www.gbif.org/tools/data-validator and species matching https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup, Flora of Tropical East Africa book, and geo-locate https://www.geo-locate.org/web/default.html. 6. Forty nine unresolved records were set aside for further review. 7. Darwin Core Archive Assistant http://tools.gbif.org/dwca-assistant/ was used to produces the XML descriptor file ("meta.xml")
