This project mobilize more than 70,000 data records on the plant diversity of Gabon from the specimen collection of the National Herbarium of Gabon, from forest inventories, old journals and unpublished reports. Taxonomic information are updated and additional data are mobilized in collaboration with research centres and museums in Belgium, France, Netherlands and the USA, as some of the activities to set up a digital herbarium.
Data from partner databases are integrated into the database of the National Herbarium and shared via GBIF to help governmental and non-governmental organizations develop effective biodiversity conservation strategies.
Project Progress
A project launch workshop introduced the goals and expected outcomes of the project to 25 persons coming from 7 national institutions. A presentation was also organized for the staff of Agence Nationale des Parcs Nationaux du Gabon to introduce the different types of GBIF supported classes of datasets and disseminate knowledge acquired during the first BID Capacity Enhancement Workshop.
The Herbier National du Gabon proceeded to the inventory of 27 000 specimens, among which 24 000 are already repertoried in a BRAHMS database.
254 sampling-event data of forest transects and permanent plots from the Institut de Recherche en Ecologie Tropicale (IRET) are already digitized.
