Description

This study examines the distribution patterns of butterflies from the Euptychiina and Pronophilina subtribes (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Satyrini) in the tropical cloud forests of Cochabamba (Yungas). The analysis is based on an elevational gradient from 700 to 3,700 meters, utilizing 1,147 records of Satyrini butterflies. The study focuses on species richness, analyzing 55 species of Euptychiina and 109 species of Pronophilina. The information was gathered thanks to the sponsorship of the Tropical Andean Butterfly Diversity Project and the "Werner Hannagarth" scholarship program of the PUMA Foundation, during the years 2007 to 2008.

Geographic Coverages

The study area covers approximately 5,243 km², corresponding to five sampling transects conducted in the yungas of Cochabamba (Bolivia). These transects span from the southeast of Carrasco National Park (PNC) (S 17.7, W 64.64) to the northwest of Chapare (S 16.80, W 66.28). Three transects are within the jurisdiction of the PNC protected area (Pojo, Totora, and Villa Tunari areas munipility), one along the main Cochabamba-Santa Cruz highway (Sindicato Paracti), and the last transect within the "Municipal Flora and Fauna Reserve of North Tiquipaya" (RMFFNT).
