Densities of the most important meiobenthos phyla in an Avicennia marina mangrove sediment in Gazi Bay (Kenya) together with the sediment environmental data. Three replicate samples were taken for every monthly sample between August 1992 and July 1993. The data were digitized by VLIZ from the original report: Okondo, J. (1995). Community structure and seasonal fluctuation of meiobenthos in the Avicenna marina mangrove sediments at Gazi Bay, Kenya. MSc Thesis. RUG: Gent. 56 pp.
Additional info
Biotic samples were taken using cores of diameter 3.6 cm for meiofaunal analysis. This was done to a depth of about 20 cm. Soon after sampling the sediment was sectioned into four slices of 0-2 cm, 2-4 cm, 4-10 cm and 10-r cm. Fifteen taxa were observed with most of them occurring in relatively low numbers (<1 % of the count). Nematoda was the dominant taxon (76-98 %). They were followed by oligochaetes, turbellarians, halacaroids and rotifers. Harpacticoid copepods, polychaetes and other taxa were rather insignificant with notable absence in some sample months. Abiotic factors taken were: granulometric parameters, rainfall, leaf fall, T, salinity, POM, pH, pigments, DO2, redox potential, porosity, nutrients, organic carbon.Taxonomic Coverages
