Classic localities of aquatic Arthropoda from the Western Balkans

Study Extent

The main goal in compiling the data set was to provide relevant spatial data on classic localities of taxa (species and subspecies) that was described on the territory of SEE economies (or in their immediate vicinity) and whose present distributions are restricted to the Western Balkans region.

Sampling

ata was compiled on the basis of direct review of a large number of published monographs and articles containing a scientific description of selected taxa.

Quality Control

From the compiled literature, the original (verbatim) scientific name and localities where it was first found (classic locality) were extracted. Actual taxonomic status of every taxon and scientific names were aligned with currently accepted scientific taxonomy and nomenclature.

The main area of interest is focused to the non-EU countries/economies from the western Balkan peninsula: Albania, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia but, data from bordering areas with neighboring countries: Croatia, Greece and Bulgaria are also included.
