The dataset contains records of nocturnal birds (Aves: Strigidae), and particularly the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-2010) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between March and April 2010 during field visits to 39 sampling points in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded by acoustic observation.Purpose
This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will make available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 50 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela.Sampling
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for nocturnal birds in and around the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam. Each sampling point was visited once in winter/spring (March-April of 2010), for a 10 minutes acoustic census. The methodology consisted in the emission of vocal recordings for one minute to induce audible responses of individuals of Bubo bubo, or other species. The playbacks were preceded by a fixed listening time (2 min), where all contacts with any nocturnal species were recorded. All censuses were carried out in the period of 30 minutes before sunset and one hour after sunset.Quality Control
