A database of records of road kill from members of the general public, submitted online through Biology.ie website.Purpose
The purpose of this initiative is to collect observations on road casualties to see if certain species are more prone to this kind of mortality, or whether road kill shows marked seasonal or geographic patterns. Data collected as part of this survey will be used to monitor the incidental killings of Annex IV species of the EU Habitats Directive.Sampling Description
Quality Control
The data is largely unvalidated, but some checks are in place to ensure that records are submitted with a bona fide email address to follow up at a later stage if necessary.Method steps
- Member of the public submit sighting through an online mapping facility provided by Biology.ie. The coordinates of records are generated by observers marking the location on Google maps. Addition information, such as recorder name, location name and road number can be included with the record.
