Description

The dataset contains the results of the records of 1564 nests of the 5 species of Grebes Podicipediformes: Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus, Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena, Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis, Slavonian Grebe Podiceps auratus, Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis in the territory of mainly the western part of Ukraine, partly in other regions, namely: Lviv, Ternopil, Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Khmel'nyts'kyi, Zakarpattia, Sumy, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi administrative regions. 86% of the records are located in Lviv, Volyn and Ternopil regions (1356 records).

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The dataset represents the results of 5 species of Grebes Podicipediformes: Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus, Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena, Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis, Slavonian Grebe Podiceps auratus, Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis nests' registrations within the territory of mainly western Ukraine for the period starting from 1962 to 2015. This dataset contains data on 657 Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus, 90 Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena, 773 Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis, 1 Slavonian Grebe Podiceps auratus, 44 Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis nests.

Sampling

The collection of materials for the bank of bird nests of Ukraine took place according to the methods and on the basis of the questionnaires developed by the Western Ukrainian Ornithological Society. The search for nests was carried out both during special research and for accidental finds. A separate questionnaire was filled out for each registered nest, which indicated the species, date and place of discovery, describes the biotope and exact location of the nest, its dimensions and nesting material, the dimensions and weight of eggs or chicks (if such measurements were taken). Such a questionnaire is a reliable documented fact of the nesting of a species in a certain area. The nomenclature follows the Catalog of Life.

Quality Control

The authors of the dataset are fully responsible for the quality of the published data (species identification, georeferencing, other provided data).

The dataset consists of records of nests of 5 species of Grebes Podicipediformes: Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus, Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena, Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis, Slavonian Grebe Podiceps auratus, Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis. Other species of waterfowl occasionally recorded with them were also included in the dataset.
