While membership of the Data4Nature Coalition is restricted to providers of development finance and ODA donors, any institution may be listed as a supporter provided that they commit to one or more of the activities outlined in the coalition statement, namely facilitation, promotion or funding of the Data4Nature objectives.
The GBIF Secretariat will act as coordinator of the Data4Nature Coalition. Pending further discussion, a Steering Committee including relevant stakeholders may be established to provide light-touch governance and oversight of the Coalition’s activities including reporting of progress, acceptance of members/supporters and allocation of funds committed by members or supporters.
Commitments made under the Data4Nature Coalition encourage a set of implementation activities related to data sharing that support delivery of a range of aligned commitments and objectives. In addition to those specifically mentioned in the agreed principles and objectives, these include (but are not restricted to):
Industry-based Principles
- Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI)
- Cross-Sector Biodiversity Initiative (CSBI): Good practices for the collection of biodiversity baseline data
Frameworks and Initiatives
- Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TFND): Aligning with technical scope to engage with data providers to align reporting with relevant standard setters
- Finance for Biodiversity Initiative (F4B): A Framework for Systematic Change: Disclose Impacts on Biodiversity
- CSBI Mitigation Hierarchy Guide, prepared by The Biodiversity Consultancy: Appendix 2: Knowledge gaps in avoidance and minimization
Recommendations
- UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science: § IV. Areas of Action i.16.g, i.16.h, ii.17.j, iii.18.h & vii.22.b
- The OECD Common Approaches §7. Recommendations on exchange and disclosure of information
- The Escazú Agreement: "Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice on Environmental Issues in Latin America and the Caribbean: §4.9
- Gullison RE et al. (2015) Good practices for the collection of biodiversity baseline data, prepared for the Multilateral Financing Institutions Biodiversity Working Group & the Cross-Sector Biodiversity Initiative: §7.3: Data sharing
International Commitments
UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
- Global indicator: Growth of GBIF-mediated data: Aichi Biodiversity Target 19 and draft indicator towards Target 20, First draft of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
- GBIF-mediated data as an underlying contributor to indicators for Aichi Biodiversity Target 5 (habitat loss and degradation), Target 9 (invasive alien species), Target 11 (protected areas), Target 12 (extinction risk) and Target 13 (genetic diversity). This data remains instrumental in applying the monitoring framework for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
- Data shared data through the Data4Nature initiative will support implementation of proposed Target 15 in the First Draft of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework:
All businesses (public and private, large, medium and small) assess and report on their dependencies and impacts on biodiversity, from local to global, and progressively reduce negative impacts, by at least half and increase positive impacts, reducing biodiversity-related risks to businesses and moving towards the full sustainability of extraction and production practices, sourcing and supply chains, and use and disposal.
- Data4Nature is explicitly mentioned in the draft recommendation on Knowledge Management from the CBD 3rd Subsidiary Body on Implementationt (SBI3), proposing that COP-15
Welcomes the Data4Nature initiative and consequently invites Parties, non-Parties, funding agencies, development banks and other relevant stakeholders to take biodiversity into account when developing environmental and social impact assessments and share the biodiversity data from the assessments through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.
UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Data generated and shared through the Data4Nature initiative will inform research and policy tools associated with conservation, climate change adaptation, food security and human health in support of progress towards SDG 2: Zero hunger, SDG 3: Good health and well-being, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life below water, and SDG 15: Life on land
UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
- Data generated and shared through the Data4Nature initiative will support nature-based solutions relating both to climate change adaptation and mitigation incorporated in the Paris and Glasgow climate change agreements.
