Biodiversity data from the GBIF network supports research that spans disciplinary boundaries (Heberling et al. 2021) and expands the scope of possible research ((Deloitte 2023](/news/5WZThcL928vmPnSvrGhZfE/)). By monitoring emerging patterns of data use through our literature tracking programme and establishing strategic partnerships with experts in different disciplines, GBIF sets priorities for scaling up support of data holders and users across different scientific communities of practice.
For people coming to GBIF the first time, thematic communities offer a familiar lens for zeroing in on research and policy areas they already know. Whether these communities focus on specific domains, topics or techniques, engaging them helps us better understand their specific data needs as well as strategies for improving the supply and quality of relevant, fit-for-purpose data.
Keeping in mind our mission to make comprehensive biodiversity information freely available for science and decisions, the GBIF Science Committee offers guidance and ongoing review of our progress in serving current thematic communities as well as our potential to support new ones.
