The dataset contains the biodata on bat specimens from Ukraine, kept in the Museum and Institute of Zoology of PAS. The dataset covers 65 specimens of two families: Vespertilionidae and Rhinolophidae. The time period: 1910–1940. Origin of the specimens: different regions of Ukraine (mostly); also Georgia, Turkmenistan and Russia. Most of the specimens were collected (and labelled) by the Ukrainian zoologist Borys Popov (1913–1942). In addition to its scientific importance, the collection is of historical value.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The dataset contains the biodata on 65 bat specimens of two families, Vespertilionidae and Rhinolophidae, kept in the Museum and Institute of Zoology of PAS. This collection includes specimens originating from the territory of Ukraine or collected by Ukrainian zoologists. Most of the specimens were collected (and labelled) by Borys Popov (1913–1942). According to the labels, the specimens were collected between 1910 and 1940 in different regions of Ukraine with a few specimens from Georgia, Turkmenistan and Russia. All specimens are preserved as dry skins (without skulls). Most of them have preserved original detailed labels, which are supplemented by labels with MIZ PAS inventory numbers. The skins were, presumably, transferred to MIZ PAS after the Second World War.Sampling
All specimens have been examined in situ. Their identification and taxonomy were verified; a few specimens were identified for the first time (by L. Godlevska). Labels (mostly in Cyrillic) were copied in full. The localities where the specimens were collected have been assigned to the current territorial-administrative division and georeferenced.Quality Control
The final dataset was checked and cleaned.Method steps
- Examination of the catalogue of the collection funds of the Museum and Institute of Zoology, PAS.
- Examination of the collection funds of the Museum and Institute of Zoology, PAS, in situ.
- Examination of the specimens; verifying identification and taxonomy or specimens' identification.
- Photo-copying of specimens’ labels.
- Compilation of the data on the examined specimens; georeferencing.
- Organising data for publication in GBIF.
- Data checking and cleaning.
- Publication biodata on the GBIF.
