The community composition of suspended phytoplankton was investigated at 7 stations along the East Greenland coast as part of the EU project ECOTIP. Water was sampled in Dove Bay (1 station: 5, 40, 50 m), Kong Oscar fjord (2 stations: 5, 42, 50 m and 5, 43, 50 m), Arden Caple fjord (3 stations: 5, 40, 50 m; 5, 40, 50 m; 5, 20, 50 m) and outside Scoresby Sound on the continental shelf (1 station: 5, 40, 50 m). While 5 m and 50 m were used as standard depths, the intermediate depth was chosen depending on the fluorescence sub-surface maximum. At each sampling depth, the water was collected with a 10 L Niskin bottle attached to a sampling rosette. A subsample of 100 mL from the Niskin bottle was preserved with 1 mL acidic Lugol’s solution for later microscopic analysis. From this field work, there are also other data available: 1) cruise track with a station list (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.953084, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.953083), 2) underway measurements (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.959027), 3) concentration of suspended chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, particulate organic carbon (POC), and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) (https://doi.org/10.11582/2024.00038), 4) downward flux of chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), and the atomic ratio of POC:PON (https://doi.org/10.11582/2024.00040, and 5) community composition of sinking protist cells (https://doi.org/10.15468/ds6q26).Sampling Description
Study Extent
At each of the seven sampling stations in East Greenland (1 station in Dove Bay, 2 stations in Kong Oscar Fjord, 3 stations in Arden Caple fjord, 1 station outside Scroesby Sound), water was collected at 5 m, 50 m, and (close to) the sub-surface fluorescence maximum.Sampling
At each station, the water at the three sampling depths was collected using a 10 L Niskin bottle attached to a sampling rosette. The water was gently transferred from the Niskin bottles to carboys (using a silicon hose) and a subsample of 100 mL was preserved with acidic Lugol’s solution (1% final concentration) and the sample was stored cool (+4 C) and in darkness until further analysis ashore.Method steps
- The microscopic analysis was later conducted at the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) in Sopot, Poland and the phytoplankton taxa were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level.
