Invasive species - Invasive plants near waterways in West and East Flanders, Belgium is a sampling event dataset published by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). It contains over 2,000 occurrences of 25 invasive alien plants along navigable waterways in West and East Flanders, Belgium. The dataset is the result of an exploratory screening in 2011 for these plants by the INBO and is a first attempt to assess the problem of invasive alien species along these watercourses, in order to underpin options for control or management.
We have released this dataset to the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero waiver. We would appreciate it if you follow the INBO norms for data use (https://www.inbo.be/en/norms-data-use) when using the data. If you have any questions regarding this dataset, don't hesitate to contact us via the contact information provided in the metadata or via opendata@inbo.be.
This dataset was published as open data for the TrIAS project (Tracking Invasive Alien Species http://trias-project.be, Vanderhoeven et al. 2017), with technical support provided by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO).
Sampling Description
Study Extent
In 2011, ca. 1250 kilometers were screened (not in detail) for the presence of invasive alien plants, as defined by the ISEIA-protocol. 23 invasive alien plant species were recorded, of which 13 belong to the ‘black list’ (species with the highest biological impact). The presence of invasive alien plants spanned 74 kilometers of river or canal banks (not taking overlap between species into account), 48 kilometers of which were occupied by black-list species.Sampling
Fieldwork was mostly done by bike, surveying the river- and canalbanks. The goal was to have an overview, not to have an exhaustive mapping of all alien plants near waterways.Quality Control

- The source data for this dataset are stored in the INBO NBN database.
- Create two SQL views to transform the data to Darwin Core (Events and Occurrences). These queries are available on GitHub at https://github.com/inbo/data-publication/tree/master/datasets/invasive-plants-waterways-occurrences.
- These views are connected to the INBO IPT and documented with metadata.
- The dataset is published and registered with GBIF.
