Description
The Herbarium was created in 1977 and is associated with the Botany area of the Department of Botany, Ecology and Plant Physiology (Faculty of Sciences) of the University of Cordoba (Spain). Its facilities are located at the Rabanales Campus, on the outskirts of the city of Córdoba. This herbarium, registered in Index Herbariorum with the acronym COFC (Thiers 2019; http://sweetgum.nybg.org/science/ih/), includes 3 botanical collections: one of fungi and two of vascular plants, the historical collection and the general collection, the latter being the most significant. The general collection houses a wide representation of the vascular flora of the province of Córdoba and other Spanish regions, as well as a modest representation of plants collected in neighboring countries (Portugal, France, Morocco, etc.). It includes mostly wild plants, with a minimal representation of ornamental plants. The collection, apart from its importance from an educational and teaching point of view, is a valuable source of research that has been useful for the elaboration of important works such as Vascular Flora of Western Andalusia and Flora iberica. In recent years the collection has been nourished mainly by the large number of collections made throughout the peninsular territory on the occasion of the taxonomic revision of various genera within the Flora iberica Project, being one of the peninsular herbariums with greater representation of the genera Centaurea (Asteraceae) and Festuca (Poaceae), both considered among the most diverse and taxonomically complex in the Iberian Peninsula.
