Description
The origins of the Natural Sciences collections can be traced back to the acquisition in 1694 by the Toun College of Edinburgh (later the University of Edinburgh) of the collection of the late Sir Andrew Balfour. However, the vast majority of the founding collections were built up by Robert Jamieson, Regius Professor of Natural History from 1804-1854. Since then the collections have been added to considerably and continue to be an inspiration for research and understanding of the world around us. Today the collections at National Museums Scotland number over 10 million specimens and are comprehensive in their coverage of the natural world, although Botany is only represented by fossil plants. The collections are global in terms of their content and are divided into four sections: Earth Systems, Invertebrate Biology Palaeobiology, and Vertebrate Biology.Contacts
