discussion
Remarks. The specimens studied here match the descriptions of Schizoporella dunkeri in the literature (Hayward & Ryland 1995, 1999; Reverter-Gil & Fernández-Pulpeiro 1999; Hayward & McKinney 2002). This species has a broad distribution along the North Atlantic coast, from the Faroe Islands and western Norway (Hayward & Ryland 1999) to the Canary Islands (Arístegui Ruiz 1984). It is also very abundant in several areas including the northwest Iberian Peninsula (Reverter-Gil & Fernández-Pulpeiro 1999, 2001). In the Mediterranean, despite difficulties with synonymy (see Hayward & Ryland 1995, 1999), it seems to be abundant from shallow water to 60 m and it is very common in the Adriatic (Hayward & McKinney 2002). Our findings represent the first record of S. dunkeri for Madeira.
