Occurs in open woods on slopes, mountain streamsides, shady ravines and valleys (SOURCE: http://flora.huh.harvard.edu/china/ Flora of China. 1994); http://www.worldagroforestry.org/World Agroforesty Centre In: Useful Tropical Plants http://tropical.theferns.info/)
Anonang is a 10 m high tree. It has 4-20 x 2-10 cm ovate to elliptic and acute leaves. Each leaf is rounded at the base with 1-4 cm long petioles. Anonang has lax and paniculately branched cymes that are usually shorter than the foliage. On the other hand, its flowers are dingy white while the peduncles are relatively short and thick. Its calyx are campanulate and glabrate. Its calyx is also coriaceous except for the short, broad, membranous teeth more or less pubescent on the inner side. It also has narrowly petals with hairy stamens. It also has 1-5.5 mm long drupaceous fruits. Each ovately ellipsoid fruit is salmon-red with sticky juice and subtended by broad, cupular calyx. Grows in dry woodlads, dry limestone hills (SOURCE: Barwick. M.. 2004. Tropical and Subtropical Trees - A Worldwide Encyclopaedic Guide; Adams. C.D.1972. Flowering Plants of Jamaica In: Useful Tropical Plants http://tropical.theferns.info/)
This is a 10-18 m high tree with an irregular trunk. Its leaves are generally bunched at ends of branchlets. Each 7-15 x 3.5 cm leaf is often so closed to appear yet somewhat verticillate. Moreover, each leaf is glabrous and oblong-lanceolate. Each leaf has an acuminate base and apex. It has 2-2.7 cm long canaliculate petioles and fragrant white flowers. These flowers turn cinnamon with age. A flower has 7-8 mm long calyx tube, villous with silky hair withing and 5 oblong-otuse corolla lobes. The corolla tube is constricted over the elongated style which is twice bifid at the apex. (Pancho, J.V and Wm. Sm. Gruezo. 2009. Vascular Flora of Mount Makiling and Vicinity (Luzon: Philippines), Part 3. Philipp. Agric. Sci. 92 (Suppl.1): S1-S496. ) p.218
