The data set forms part of the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) Odonata Collections housed in the Natural History Museum of Jamaica (NHMJ) Zoological Collections.Purpose
The data set was created to facilitate open access through digitization. This access will enhance research and fill data gaps that exist.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The specimens in the dataset were collected from several parishes across Jamaica.Collections were conducted by various collectors between 1941 and 2010 during special projects and/or to expand the Odonata collections of the Institute of Jamaica.Sampling
The data on the Odonata collections were stored in a specialized database called Biolink. The select dataset was converted from Biolink to Microsoft Excel in order for data managers to clean and verify the information.Quality Control
Persons were trained by project partners from the British Museum of Natural History in the digitization of specimens and the setting up of workflows. Verification of data was performed in house by the Zoology Laboratory Technician and the Senior Research Officer, Entomology and checked on the GBIF data portal.Method steps
- Data converted from Biolink to Microsoft Excel.
- Cleaning of data: Standardization of data in Excel Sheets, updating and correction of specimen identification with authorities. Data sheet formatted using Darwin Core requirements. Unique identifiers were created for each specimen Generating and printing barcodes Assigning barcodes to specimens and specimen storage areas
