This resource lists the species of the family Formicidae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) known to occur in the Caribbean region of Colombia. Nine subfamilies, 16 tribes, 30 genera, 95 species are listed. The information has been compiled from information available in the main catalogs dealing with the group and in recent literature. References to all original descriptions and taxonomic revisions are included. This information was gathered from the following entomological collections in Colombia: Universidad del Atlántico, Puerto Colombia (UARC).Purpose
This checklist has as main purpose to increase the current state of knowledge of the diversity of Formicidae in the Caribbean region where it is found protected areas, strategic ecosystems as tropical dry forest and landscapes with a high connectivity and ecological integrity. This information will be useful to further investigation on the conservation of those ecosystems. Also, with this checklist the information of Formicidae in biological collection, in national and regional level, will be available through GBIF, where this information can be consulted for taking actions to protect those important ecosystems. Lastly, with the generation of this checklist will strength the interinstitutional network between the revised collections.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The list compiles the names of the species of the family Formicidae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) that have been recorded for the Colombian Caribbean region according to the literature.Sampling
Information on the names, authors and references of the species of the family Formicidae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) that have been recorded for the Colombian Caribbean region was compiled from the literature. The list was obtained from the classification of Guerrero, R. J., & Delsinne, T. (2019) and subsequently published works not included in that book. The names were verified in the original descriptions, as well as in the catalogs mentioned here, in addition to recent works on nomenclature.Quality Control
The taxonomic quality of the checklist is ensured by having experts confirming the identification of the species. The data quality is ensured with the revision performed by the BID Regional Project Support Team, where all critical errors are pointed and fixed.Method steps
- The survey of species recorded for the region was based on Guerrero, R. J., & Delsinne, T. (2019). This initial list was compared and complemented with later published Works and not included in that book. in order to include species that had not been included in those catalogs.
- The spelling and authorship of each name was verified in the aforementioned catalogs and in the original descriptions.
- The distribution of the species in the region, by department, was compiled by consulting all the articles in which each species is cited for the Colombian Caribbean region.
- The bibliographic references were compiled from original descriptions, new records or original descriptions, new records or nomenclatural acts.

Geographic Coverages
This checklist will be constantly updated as new entomological collections are visited throughout the project, with known occurrence for the Colombian Caribbean. The department with the highest number of species recorded was Bolívar with 68, followed by Magdalena with 58, Cesar with 32, Atlántico 30 and lastly Guajira with 24 species. Once the project is completed, the list will be updated with the species collected and deposited in the host institution (Universidad del Atlántico) in the coming years.
