The Vermont Wild Bee Survey was the first comprehensive effort to understand the bee fauna for the state of Vermont. Specimens were collected from 2019 through 2021 by a variety of project staff and community naturalists. This dataset includes all records that were not part of a specific study during the survey period.Sampling Description
Study Extent
In 2019, sampling effort was focused on 12 "priority blocks" that fell at least partially within Chittenden County. These 5 km X 5 km blocks were designated during the Vermont Breeding Bird Survey and since used for several wildlife atlases in Vermont. Repeated sampling was done by volunteers at three stratified sites within each block from May through August of 2019. From 2019 through 2021, additional sampling was done throughout the state, with a focus on locations that may harbor unique bee species.Sampling
This dataset includes both "bee bowl" and active netting surveys. Surveys in 2019 followed protocols from The Very Handy Bee Manual (Droege, 2015). Subsequent bee bowl efforts used the same bowls, but varied the number and duration (recorded in the sampling events).Quality Control
Identifications done by Spencer Hardy, Michael Veit, Joan Milam, and Sam Droege.Method steps
