The province of Overijssel lies in the east of the Netherlands. The IJssel river forms a natural boundary along most of the border with the province of Gelderland in the southwest. The province encompasses an area with sandy soil that is criss-crossed with rivers and streams, apart from the northwest, where polders and lakes dominate the landscape. Over 1,142,000 people live on an area that covers 3,420 square kilometres.
