Original provider: Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, Inc. Dataset credits: Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, Inc. Abstract: These data were collected during local (5-8 hour) whale watching trips conducted by the Viking Fleet and CRESLI. Trips originated from Montauk Harbor in Montauk, New York and occurred regularly from 1997-2002 and again from 2009 - present, during July, August and early September. The data were collected during efforts to gather information about the distribution, abundance, habitat use and site fidelity of cetaceans in the waters around Montauk, New York. The general public were educated, and volunteers were involved in collecting data, as citizen scientists. The data are maintained by CRESLI and are submitted to appropriate catalogs when possible. Purpose: The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island is a non- profit research and education organization. Our mission is: "To promote and foster understanding and stewardship of coastal ecosystems through research and education ." Part of our work is to observe and document the whale and sea bird populations of NY and New England and to take people to see these animals in the wild. Since 2002 we have been offering incredible and successful multi-day offshore pelagic bird and whale observation trips. Supplemental information: [2022-03-17] A record for Atlantic white-sided dolphin on 2009-07-06 was added. [2020-10-16] The 2018-19 data were appended. [2020-08-07] The existing data was updated and 2016-2017 data were added. [2015-05-12] Dataset was updated with 2012-2014 data.Purpose
