The University of Oslo (UiO) is the oldest university in Norway and located in the national capital, Oslo.

The UiO Natural History Museum is part of the University of Oslo and consists of the Botanical Garden and the museum buildings at Tøyen in central Oslo. I addition we have a collection facility at Økern.Our main tasks are research, collection curating and scientific outreach. Our scientific collections comprise over 6 million objects, making them the largest natural history collections in Norway. Part of these collections are on display for the general public in our zoological and geological exhibitions and botanical garden. We have approximately 160 employees. Among these are about 70 scientific positions within biology and geology.

The Department of Biosciences (IBV) has five research sections; Aquatic Biology and Toxicology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology and Cell Biology, Genetics and Evolutionary Biology and Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis. The Department's research focuses on understanding the fundamental biological processes from the molecular and cellular level to population and ecosystem level. The Department has 130 employees, and about 175 Ph.D. students and postdocs/researchers. There are at any given time about 650 students divided into undergraduate and graduate level. The Department of Biosciences (IBV) was established in January 2013, following the merger of the Departments of Molecular Biosciences and Biology.

The Department of Geosciences was formed in 2003 as a merger between the three earth sciences departments: the Geology Department, the Department of Physical Geography and the Department of Geophysics. The merger resulted in the widest ranging earth sciences department in Norway, covering a wide range of disciplines from deep mantle processes to atmospheric sciences.
