description
Description. Male (holotype): Prosoma pale orange, mottled with brown spots; eye borders black. Chelicerae pale orange with pair of longitudinal brown stripes. Legs pale orange, densely mottled with brown spots. Labium and endites pale orange, distally lighter. Sternum pale yellow with slightly darker margins. Opisthosoma cream colored, dorsally with brownish gray pattern of lateral small longitudinal stripes and chevrons on posterior half. Total length 9.4. Prosoma: 4.0 long, 4.4 wide. Opisthosoma: 4.9 long, 2.9 wide. Eyes: diameters: 0.30, 0.28, 0.24, 0.26; interdistances: 0.36, 0.12, 0.50, 0.48, 0.34, 0.26. Legs (2143): I: 24.9 (6.6, 2.6, 6.7, 6.8, 2.2); II: 26.8 (7.2, 2.6, 7.5, 7.2, 2.3); III: 17.6 (5.1, 1.8, 4.8, 4.3, 1.6); IV: 20.3 (5.6, 2.1, 5.3, 5.6, 1.7). Palp: vRTA 1 small, triangular and pointed. Subtegulum hidden behind embolus base, not visible in ventral view. Embolus long, arising from tegulum at 7 o’clock position. Conductor distally widened (Figs 51 − 52). Female (AMNH, Tamazunchale): Coloration pattern as in male. Total length 11.3. Prosoma: 4.6 long, 4.8 wide. Opisthosoma: 6.7 long, 5.0 wide. Eyes: diameters: 0.30, 0.28, 0.22, 0.24; interdistances: 0.40, 0.20, 0.52, 0.50, 0.42, 0.36. Legs (2143): I: 20.7 (5.9, 2.4, 5.2, 5.5, 1.7); II: 23.6 (6.7, 2.5, 6.2, 6.2, 2.0); III: 15.4 (4.7, 1.9, 3.8, 3.6, 1.4); IV: 18.1 (5.3, 2.1, 4.5, 4.7, 1.5). Epigyne: epigynal field rounded, as long as wide. Median septum one and a half times wider than long, with posterior margin not surpassing epigastric furrow (Fig. 53). Vulva: copulatory ducts wide and short, less than one third of the spermathecae length. Spermathecae large, oval. Basal part of fertilization ducts narrow, less than one-sixth copulatory duct width, distal part with one coil and laterad (Fig. 54). Variation. Males (n = 6): total length 9.2 – 9.4; prosoma length 4.0 – 4.4; femur I length 5.9 – 7.2. Females (n = 2): total length 11.3 – 13.1; prosoma length 4.3 – 4.7; femur I length 5.2 – 5.9.
diagnosis
Diagnosis. Males of C. ferrugineus comb. nov. are distinguished from those of the other species of the genus by the palp with dRTA short, thick and curved, vRTA 2 bifid with rounded branches and tegulum with large retroproximal projection (Figs 51 − 52: tp). Females are distinguished by the epigyne with median septum rebordered along entire width and laterally, forming a U-shaped atrium, slightly over two times wider than long (Fig. 53).
distribution
Distribution. Southeastern United States to northern Guatemala (Map 2). FIGURES 55 − 58. Curicaberis granada sp. nov. 55 − 56 male, left palp (55 ventral, 56 retrolateral); 57 − 58 female (57 epigyne, ventral view, 58 vulva, dorsal view). C = conductor; CD = copulatory duct; dRTA = dorsal branch of RTA; E = embolus; FD = fertilization duct; GP = glandular projection; LL = lateral lobes; MS = median septum; SP = spermathecae; vRTA 1 = projection 1 of ventral branch of RTA; vRTA 2 = projection 2 of ventral branch of RTA. Scale lines: 1 mm.
