Type material Type material could not be located at the BMNH or MNHN and is presumed lost. The type locality is given as the South Atlantic Ocean, “ Near Iles de Powel ” (South Orkney Islands). Remarks This is most likely V. antarctica as suggested by Barnard (1932) and Vinogradov et al. (1982). However, Bate figures and describes pereopods 5 and 6 as being twice as long as pereopods 3 and 4, which is unlike any species of Vibilia. Also, the carpal process of gnathopod 2 is too short for typical V. antarctica. Thus, Vibilia edwardsi is at best, a doubtful synonym of V. antarctica.
