Se realizará un estudio herpetofaunístico en los distritos de Teotitlán de Flores Magón y Tuxtepec en Oaxaca, los cuales se ubican en la Sierra Mazateca y abarcan un área de aproximadamente 1,050 Km2 en el sistema montañoso del norte de Oaxaca, entre los paralelos 18°00´ y 18°22´ de latitud N y los meridianos 96°30´ y 97°15´ de longitud O. La región presenta 4 tipos de vegetación: bosque mesófilo de montaña, bosque de pino, selva alta y selva mediana. El clima está delimitado por la altitud, ya que por arriba de los 1000 msnm se encuentra un clima templado y por debajo de estos un clima caluroso Dependiendo de la región se presenta una precipitación entre 2,602 y 4,942 mm al año. Cuenta con un intervalo altitudinal de 60 a 2,600 msnm. Con los datos obtenidos se elaborará un inventario herpetofaunístico para contribuir al conocimiento de la diversidad de la zona, y en base a los registros se realizarán análisis para conocer la distribución de las especies por tipos de vegetación, uso del microhábitat, la distribución altitudinal de las especies, su estacionalidad; los cuales son factores importantes que determinan la presencia de las especies de anfibios y reptiles en una región determinada. Se determinará el número de especies endémicas a México y se registrarán los nuevos hallazgos que puedan encontrarse para el área de estudio, tales como nuevos registros de distribución o nuevas especies. Se determinará además el grado de amenaza de la herpetofauna local de acuerdo con autoridades nacionales (Nom-059-SEMARNAT-2010) e internacionales (Libro Rojo de la IUCN y CITES).
