Description

This dataset is created and maintained by Dr. Andrij Susulovsky from the State Museum of Natural History of the NAS of Ukraine and Dr. Solomia Susulovska from the Zoological Museum of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. This dataset comprises the available data on the distribution of 18 rare species of free-living soil nematodes from the nematological collection of the SMNH NASU in different regions of Ukraine and a few other countries (Sri Lanka, Israel). It contains the data on the type and other localities of six nematode species described from the territory of Ukraine. This dataset is created in frames of the project «Digitalization of natural collections that suffered damage as a result of hostilities and related factors: development of protocols and implementation on the basis of the State Natural History Museum of the NAS of Ukraine»

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The study includes the specimens of rare species of free-living soil nematodes deposited in the collection of the SMNH NASU that were selected as prioritized for digitization. It mostly covers species described or firstly reported from the territory of Ukraine.

Sampling

The data are extracted from the labels on permanent slides and research publications.

Quality Control

The taxonomic names correspond to taxonomic names in GBIF and COL. The quality of data is manually controlled and verified, taking into account the research expertise of Andrij Susulovsky, and also controlled through automatic procedures GBIF data validator.

Method steps

1. Taking photos of the labels on permanent slides; 2. Reidentification of taxa following recent taxonomy; 3. Extracting the locality, collector, date, and other relevant information from the labels; 4. Translation of the primary label information from Ukrainian to English; 5. Verification of localities using recent maps and research publications.
