Study Extent

Liwonde National Park is located within Machinga District in the eastern region of Malawi along the Shire River north of Liwonde township. The then present area of the park was approximately 250 square miles. The park''s western boundary incorporates 15 miles of the Shire River from the Likwenu River inlet and railway north to the base of Lake Malombe, then north east to the Mangochi Forest Reserve. The eastern boundary, which is irregular and limited along most of it's length by the cultivation west of the Ntaja-Namwera Road, lies below the Makongwa escarpment.

Sampling

These birds species were observed during bird watching activity by citizen scientists in the mopane and Brachystegia woodlands. Brachystegia woodlands had more bird species than mopane woodlands.

All the avifauna of this resource were mapped to order, family, genus, class, phylum and kingdom.
