Information on the number of individuals of springtail species in soil samples collected from oil polluted, remediated and control (background) plots in 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019 is provided. Data on 9281 specimens of 59 species of 240 soil samples.Sampling Description
Study Extent
Data were collected in 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019. In 2014 and 2019 years, soil sampling was carried out to record springtails species occurring in the area after 12 and 17 years of remediation. Five sites were established in 2015 and three were added in 2018 for a total of twenty one sites. Soil samples were taken once per year.Sampling
All sites were sampled once per year, during the growing season when most vegetation was mature enough. Four-twelve soil samples randomly obtained from each plot with a soil corer of 5 cm in diameter down to the depth of 10-20 cm.Quality Control
The data were collected and identified to species by specialist from the Institute of Biology of Komi Scientific Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.Method steps
- Four-twelve soil samples randomly obtained from each plot with a soil corer of 5 cm in diameter down to the depth of 10-20 cm. The soil samples were transported to the Institute of Biology (IB Komi SC UB RAS), Syktyvkar. Extraction was performed in Tullgren funnel extractors for seven-ten days under 40 Watt bulbs using a 96 % alcohol. The extraction time was sufficient for soil to reach the air-dry condition. Extracted springtails were separated from all other invertebrates and counted under a binocular microscope. They were then slide-mounted on cavity slides and identified to the species level using applicable determination keys (Fjellberg, 1998, 2007; Potapov, 2001, Kaprus et al., 2016). On each slide the following fields were filled out: “Collection date”, “Locality” (with geographic coordinates), “Habitat”, “Collector name” and “Determined by” (identification). Some part of sprigtails is kept in alcohol.
