Records of common ukrainian herpetofauna species for which the infestation with helminths was studied in 2021-2023. Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group (NGO). Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/4rg89d accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-14.Description
The dataset consists of records of common herpetofauna species of Ukraine, for which the infestation with different endoparasitic organisms (helminths) was studied in 2021-2023. This dataset is an addition to another dataset ("Particular records of helminths from common species of herpetofauna of Ukraine") that represents the finds of helminths species and was created in order to provide additional information for scientific studies. In particular it shows also those individuals that appeared to be helminths-free and provides more information on intensivity and extensivity of parasitic invasions. For every host the list of helminths found inside, is mentioned.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The dataset represents information on records of herpetofauna representatives that were studied as hosts of different helminths during 2021-2023.Sampling
Animals were caught manually during the peaks of activity of amphibians or reptiles (mainly from 7:00 to 11:00 am and from 5:00 to 11:00 pm). Catching of amphibians and reptiles wa performed using a net, fishing rod, fishing traps, a hook or by hand. For visualizing the records, the points of herpetofauna registrations were collected (with the indication of latitude 00.00000 N and longitude 00.00000 E) using the field off-line orientation program MAPS.ME (version 12.0.1-Google) and Google Earth Pro (Earth version 7.3.3). Visualization of records and creation of maps was carried out in the QGIS program (v.2.181, QGIS Development Team, 2016. QGIS Geographic Information System. Open Source Geospatial Foundation. URL http://qgis.org).The species identification was carried out using methodological materials (Bannikov and Darevsky, 1977; Nekrasova and Morozov-Leonov, 2001; Kuzmin, 2012). For further studies, the animals were brought alive to the laboratory complex of I. I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology, NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine, where the further study of helminths took place. No special permits were needed for such work and collecting of common species of reptiles and amphibians.Quality Control
The authors are fully responsible for the quality of the dataset and accuracy of information shown in it. The first author is a skillful herpetologist with more than 10 years of work experience.Method steps
- Conducting of field surveys and trips in search for representatives of native herpetofauna.
- Collecting of information from other local residents on the presence of certain species.
- Collecting of living specimens along with visual species identification.
- Georeferencing.
- Putting of the information in the digital table designed in MS Excel.
- Organizing of a dataset according to DarwinCore standards.
Taxonomic Coverages
The dataset consists of 205 individuals belonging to 15 species (8 amphibians and 7 reptiles) of herpetofauna of Ukraine.

Geographic Coverages
The dataset covers the territory of Ukraine (Zakarpattia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivs'k, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, Zaporizhzhia administrative regions), that was available for conducting field research and material collection during the full-scale war started by Russia against Ukraine.
