This is a checklist of the known species of fireflies (Lampyridae) recorded in Vermont. The checklist is derived from Fallon, C., A. Walker, S. Lewis, and S. Jepsen (2022). State of the Fireflies of the United States and Canada: Distributions, Threats, and Conservation Recommendations. 64 pp. Portland, OR: The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. https://xerces.org/publications/scientific-reports/state-of-fireflies-of-united-states-and-canada, with additional verified records from the Vermont Atlas of Life on iNaturalist and other occurrence records at GBIF.
The checklist is comprised of 13 confirmed species. Five additional species may be found in Vermont, but lack verified records. Fallon et. al (2022) listed this three species as having "no known records but habitat or locality is appropriate and species may occur here" for Vermont and records exist in nearby states of provinces: Photinus macdermotti, P. marginellus, and P. obscurellus. Additionally, there are many photo-observations of P. pyralis shared with iNaturalist.org, but these are of adults which are difficult to reliably identify. Pyractomena linearis is known from a few records nearby in New Hampshire and Quebec. There may be additional species but Vermont has not been fully surveyed.
Two species are recommended as Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Vermont by Fallon et. al (2022): Pyractomena dispersa and P. sinuata. Neither of these species have occurrence localities in GBIF yet.
