Description
The collections of Dixie State University, soon to be Utah Tech University, were originally made solely to help students become familiar with the southern Utah natural resources. Dixie State University became a four-year college in 2000, and its commitment to biology education expanded the use of the museum. Since that time, the St. George area of southern Utah has come under unprecedented pressure from population growth and the resultant building. Because of this growth, local habitats or biomes are under immense pressure, and disappearing or becoming fragmented at an alarming rate. The perceived importance of cataloging the biodiversity of the greater southern Utah and northern Arizona area has led to the decision to digitize the existing collections. It is also important to familiarize our natural science students with the tools being developed for recording, sharing, and using specimen-based biodiversity information.Contacts
