Description
Presentation of the MZS collectionsThe collections of the Musée Zoologique de Strasbourg originate from the natural history cabinet of an 18th century scholar, Jean Hermann (1738-1800). After his passing, his specimens were purchased by the city of Strasbourg and constituted the starting point for the future museum. The zoological collections were expanded tremendously, mainly during the 19th century, first under French (until 1870) then under German administration (1871-1918, the museum became french again after WWI). They originate from all continents and all oceans, and harbour a number of remarkable, rare as well as type specimens. Except for the insect collections that are mostly from the 20th and 21st centuries, they were, in their vast majority, collected during the 19th century. They encompass almost all animal taxa: > 10,000 Mammals, 17,800 birds, 5000 lizards, snakes, turtles and crocodiles, 2300 Amphibians, > 5000 ‘fishes’, some 900,000 insects, 5000 Arachnids, 2250 Echinoderms, 1800 sponges, some 200,000 shells and other Molluscs, >10,000 from other phyla (Crustaceans, Cnidarians, Annelids, Bryozoans etc).
