Royal Alberta Museum

Description

The Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) is the largest museum in western Canada. First opened to the public on December 7, 1967 as the Provincial Museum and Archives of Alberta, it was renamed the Royal Alberta Museum in 2005 in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, who visited Alberta that spring. In 2018, the museum moved into a new 419,000 square foot facility in downtown Edmonton. The museum collects, preserves, researches, interprets, and exhibits objects and specimens related to the heritage of Alberta's people and natural environment. Our wide ranging collecting and research activities support exhibitions, outreach and learning programs. The museum has major natural history collections in the fields of ornithology, mammalogy, ichthyology, herpetology, invertebrate zoology, botany, geology, Quaternary palaeontology, and Quaternary environments. These are supported by conservation and collections management programs. RAM is also home to the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute's processing centre.
