The Central Siberian Botanical Garden of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (CSBG SB RAS) is the largest botanical institution in the Asian part of Russia. Founded in 1946, the CSBG SB RAS is historically a consortium of two herbarium collections with their own acronyms (NS and NSK) and registration in the Index Herbariorum.
Digitization of vascular plants at 600 dpi was initiated in 2014 by using the special scanner, Herbscan, starting with the NSK type specimens of M.G. Popov’s Herbarium (Kovtonyuk, Belyaeva, 2015). At the end of 2017 the USU-Herbarium research group was organized in CSBG SB RAS for herbarium digitization and herbarium management. Our aim is to provide open online access to the digital herbarium collections in CSBG SB RAS as a worldwide data resource for the study of biodiversity.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
In this dataset we start to publish information about herbarium specimens from genus Salix L. (Salicaceae) kept in the CSBG SB RAS Digital herbarium. Plant samples were gathered by staff of the CSBG SB RAS from different regions of Russia in field trip or received during herbarium exchange.Sampling
Since 2018 herbarium specimens have been digitized using two special scanners, ObjectScan 1600 (Microtek, Taiwan), according to the international standards, at 600 dpi, with a barcode, 24-color scale and spatial scale bar. For each specimen, the species name, locality, collection date, collector, ecology and revision label are recorded. To date, more than 47,000 herbarium specimens have been digitized, verified and placed into the CSBG SB RAS Digital Herbarium (http://herb.csbg.nsc.ru:8081).Quality Control
All digitized specimens were examined and revised by Salicaceae s. str. (Populus L. and Salix L.) expert Dr. Irina Belyaeva (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK).Method steps
- Dried and pressed herbarium specimens were digitized using two special scanners, ObjectScan 1600. Images (*.jpg files) and metadata are stored in the CSBG SB RAS Digital Herbarium (Kovtonyuk, Han, Gatilova, 2018) using ScanWizard Botany and MiVapp Botany software (Microtek, Taiwan). Label metadata information placed into Calc table (Open Office) and then transferred to *.csv and Darwin Core format.
Taxonomic Coverages
The traditional family Salicaceae (willow family) included the willows, poplar, aspen, and cottonwoods. Recent genetic studies summarized by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) have greatly expanded the circumscription of the family to contain 56 genera and about 1220 species, including the Scyphostegiaceae and many of the former Flacourtiaceae (Chase et al.,2002; Christenhusz, Byng, 2016). In this dataset we will consider the family Salicaceae in sensu stricto and start with two closely related sympatric Eurasian species, Salix pentandra L. and Salix pseudopentandra (Flod.)Flod.
