In 1997 the EBCC Atlas of European breeding birds, also referred to as European Ornithological Atlas or 'EOA', was published. This voluminous book was the result of more than 25 years of fieldwork, cooperation, data gathering, data processing, writing and editing. Next to a beautiful book the data in the maps provides countless possibilities fur further studies on the distribution of the European breeding birds.Sampling Description
Study Extent
Europe, 1972-1995. Data collection periods vary per country but all lie in the mentioned period. Hundreds of thousands, perhaps more than a million, hours of fieldwork are the basis of this Atlas.Sampling
In some countries, fieldwork for this Atlas and their national atlas was combined; in others data from an independent national atlas project were used to provide dfata for this Atlas. Methods used in the field ranged from single visits to systematic surveys based on point- or line-transects or territory mapping on plots.Quality Control
It was planned that Atlas fieldwork should take place during 1985-1988. Nations organized their own fieldwork, however, and because of practical difficulties could not all meet that timescale. Where coverage was incomplete for the survey period, earlier or later data were evaluated to determine whether coverage or quality could be improved by including them.Method steps

Geographic Coverages
For defining the area of intended coverage, this atlas uses the base map of "Atlas Florae Europaeae" (Jalas & Suominen 1972, 1988) except that it includes Novaya Zembla, Franz Josef Land, all the Greek islands close to mainland Turkey, the Madeiran archipelago, the Azores, the Stavropol region of south-western Russia and the Caucasus republics.
