This data set contains occurrence data of the Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus) from a field survey in the Palas Valley, Pakistan. Numbers of calling individuals were counted during a standardized call count survey at 23 survey sites during the breeding season in April and May 2017 and 2018. Absence data at survey sites with no observations at a given day are also reported. Along with data from call count surveys we provide single point occurrences from transect walks in May and November 2019 (all sightings were counted, one occurrence refers to one individual).Purpose
This data set was complied to provide updated estimates of the local population size of the Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus) in the Palas Valley, Pakistan. This area represents one of the most important refugia for this species, as it provides a large extent of pristine forests. Current population estimates for the 21st century are missing for this species so far. Moreover, this data set should provide updated information on anthropogenic disturbance factors, such as herds and hunters visiting the area. The field data were collected within the framework of a PhD project during the years 2017, 2018, 2019.“
Sampling Description
Study Extent
Palas Valley, Pakistan During the breeding season in April and May 2017 and 2018. Absence data at survey sites with no observations at a given day are also reported. Along with data from call count surveys we provide single point occurrences from transect walks in May and November 2019Sampling
Numbers of calling individuals were counted during an standadized call count survey at 23 census sites during the breeding season (estimated listening radius 300 m according to Gaston et al. 1981). The observation period started before dawn with the first call of a Western Tragopan and numbers of calling individuals recorded during a time period of 30 min.Quality Control
To distinguish between calling individuals we noted the direction and the approximate distance of calling individuals within a listening radius of 300 m. Approximate perching sites of calling individuals were marked in a field-note sheet for each observation day at each site. Mean estimates of local population densities for each of the side valleys inferred from counted individuals per site, were comparable to published estimates from other parts of the species distribution.Method steps
- Along with data from call count surveys we provide single point occurrences from transect walks in May and November 2019 (all sightings were counted, one occurrence refers to one individual).
