State Nature Reserve Kivach

Description

The State Nature Reserve “Kivach” had been established in 1931. Its territory located in the subzone of the middle taiga of Northern Europe. The average coordinates are 62° 17' 24 " N and 033° 55' 10" E. The area of the reserve is 10931 ha, the protective zone covers 6492 ha. This limited area includes a wide variety of natural environments and high diversity of flora and fauna species. The main forms of glacial relief and a large variety of landscape facies are characteristic. Excessive moistening contributes to the existence of a developed hydrographic network. To date, in “Kivach” reserve has found and identified: lichens – 314 species, mushrooms – 847, mosses – 192, and vascular plants – 844 species. The list of registered invertebrate animals of “Kivach” includes 4950 taxa. Of these, insects represented by 4172 species. The largest units of Insects: Lepidoptera – 1130; Hymenoptera – 628; Diptera – 1389; Coleoptera – 791 species. Vertebrates are represented as follow: fish and cyclostomes – 27 species, amphibians – 5, reptiles – 3, birds – 222, and mammals – 41 species. Systematic meteorological observations in “Kivach” have been conducted since 1969, the annual Chronicle of Nature – since 1967.
