Examined Specimens: — TURKEY. J. Brant & W. H. F. Strangways s. n. (K 000247831!) In the protologue of Ziziphora brantii Koch (1844: 294), the type location is given as: “ A viro de botanica merito J. Brant, anglico Erzurum legato in itinere curdico collecta ”. The specimen was collected by J. Brant during a journey from Erzurum to Northern Iraq, however, “ Kurdistania, 1840, J. Brant & W. H. F. Strangways ” is written on the label of the specimen. It is highly probable that this sample was collected from within the borders of Turkey, as Brant & Strangways collected many specimens of on the same journey that are cited in the Flora of Turkey. The herbarium in which the type specimen is stored is not specified in the protologue. Juzepchuk (1954: 280) stated that the type specimen was deposited at B herbarium. However, no type specimen was found in B herbarium in our searches. It is highly likely that the holotype was destroyed. In the K herbarium, there is one sheet of original material that bears a plant identifiable as Ziziphora brantii. We have been unable to trace any further original material in any other herbaria. This specimen in the K herbarium is the only specimen compatible with the protologue and reflects the current application of the name Z. brantii. Therefore, the specimen at K (barcode K 000247831) is designated here as the lectotype (Fig. 5).
