discussion
Remarks: This is one of the most common and widely distributed species of Lanceola, recorded from all the world’s oceans except the Mediterranean Sea. It is also the second most common species of Physocephalata collected from the Antarctic Zone by the Eltanin. It inhabits a wide range of depths from 200 – 5500 m and even deeper, but seems to be more common at depths of 1000 – 3000 m (Vinogradov et al. 1982 / 96). Zeidler and De Broyer (2009) recorded it from the Southwest Pacific and Indian Ocean Sectors but not the Atlantic. It is recorded here from several localities from the Southwest Atlantic Sector to 61.675 ° S, representing new records for the South Atlantic. The above records from the Pacific and Indian Ocean Sectors also provide several range extensions supporting a circumpolar distribution for this species.
