The dataset presents occurrence records of invertebrates housed at the natural history collections at the National Museums of Kenya. The specimens were collected over many years from within the Lake Victoria watersheds as well as from other regions of Kenya and Africa.Purpose
The dataset was created to increase accessibility of invertebrate specimens housed at the National Museums of Kenya.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
Data was mined from invertebrate specimen labels collected from all over Africa. In addition, the project aims to sample the Rivers of Lake Victoria Basin in Kenya at different time periods and in different localities.Sampling
Data was mined from invertebrate specimens found at the entomology section, National Museums of Kenya.Quality Control
The data was validated by the taxa experts at the entomology section, National Museums of Kenya. The taxonomy was also counterchecked using peer-reviewed journals as well as the online database such as the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) among others.Method steps
- 1. Invertebrate specimens were first catalogued before digitising. The entomology collection spans over 3 million specimens and the cataloguing and digitisation has been a continuous process supported by various projects. 2. The catalogued specimens were then digitised by mining data from the specimen labels. 3. The Darwin Core guidelines were adhered to during this process. 4. The dataset was then checked and validated by the taxa experts. 5. Missing coordinates were geo-referenced using GeoLocate and validated the taxa experts. 6. The dataset was the fed into the GBIF data validator to check for any missed inconsistencies in the data records. Any inconsistencies found were reviewed and corrected. 7. Lastly the dataset was uploaded to the National Museums of Kenya IPT before publishing it on the GBIF online platform.
