The Australian Native Plants Society, Canberra Region Inc. (ANPS Canberra) was established in 1962 as the Society for Growing Australian Plants, Canberra Region Inc. and changed its name in 1999. The Society is a non-profit, voluntary organisation dedicated to the growing, conservation, preservation, promotion and appreciation of Australian native plants. The aims of ANPS Canberra of more relevance to this listing include: - To provide a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas on the horticulture of Australian native plants including their cultivated varieties - To promote the conservation of Australian plants and their habitats. - To observe and support laws for the preservation of Australian native plants. - To record faithfully all information received by the Society on the horticulture of Australian native plants and to publish such information from time to time. - To promote the study of Australian native plants by sponsoring or engaging in scientific research.. ANPS Canberra has a membership of over 200. It is affiliated with the Australian Native Plants Society Australia (ANPSA). Members also participate in Australia-wide Study Groups that focus on particular genera or plant families, or on related horticultural topics. ANPS publishes a Bulletin each month except January, a quarterly Journal and a number of information pamphlets. The Society may be contacted at PO Box 217, Civic Square, ACT 2608 or via its website http://nativeplants-canberra.asn.au/. Within ANPS Canberra the Wednesday Walks are organised by an informal group of members with a special interest in plant identification. The group meets each Wednesday for walks in areas of botanical interest. Walks are generally located within easy reach of Canberra with an occasional overnight trip further afield and provide a unique opportunity to learn more about our native flora. The group is open to all members and no prior expertise is required. Specific destinations are selected on a week-to-week basis according to the interests of group members and the vagaries of the flowering season. The walks are held throughout the year (apart from a break over the Christmas period) but are postponed in extreme weather (expected temperature over 32oC or heavy rain) or if there is a total fire ban at the proposed destination.Due to the extra difficulty in identifying plants which are not in flower the number of species identified at a site varies according to the true level of diversity at the site and season in which visited. It will also be affected by the overall weather conditions around the time of a visit. Most walks cover a walk of about 4km distance either "out and back" or a loop depending upon the site and the existing infrastructure. Including refreshment breaks between 3 and 5 hours are devoted to each walk. The routes are unstructured and it is thus not possible to be precise about the route followed. In most cases the latitude and longitude coordinates given in these records are for the point at which the walk starts.
A major exception to this is "car crawls" in which a number of sites along a road (or set of roads) are visited. In these cases separate coordinates will be given for each site for which separate records are maintained: where the sites have been grouped the Coordinate uncertainty will be increased.
