This dataset includes all fruit bats recorded from 2012 to 2016 in secondary forests and reforestation areas in four geothermal reservations in the Philippines. The data was collected under the Biodiversity Conservation and Monitoring Program of the Biodiversity Research Laboratory, Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines Diliman and the Energy Development Corporation.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The study covers ten different localities representing five secondary forests and five reforestation areas located within geothermal reservations on the islands of Luzon, Leyte, and Negros in the Philippines. Sampling was conducted from 2012 to 2016.Sampling
Mist nets were used to assess fruit bat richness, abundance, and composition across the ten sites surveyed in this study. Twenty mist nets were set in each sampling site, fifteen in the understory and five in the canopy. Understory nets were set with poles about 0.5 m from the ground, while canopy nets were set at least 15 m above the ground using a rope and pulley system.Method steps
- Three sampling sites were surveyed within each secondary forest and reforestation area per sampling year, spaced at least 150 m apart. Mist nets were transferred to a new sampling site every three nights for a total of nine nights per sampling area, except for all sites sampled in 2012 when nets were not transferred, and the Leyte PFDP in 2014 where nets were transferred every four nights.
Taxonomic Coverages
