The birding trips were to forest patches around Anwase village of Kwande Local Government Area in Benue State. No previous bird watching had been carried out in these forests. Our study of the geography of the place tells us that the portion of the Guinea forest which lies to the north of the largely montane upland extending from the Sankwala Mountains in Cross River State via the Obudu Plateau and the Bamenda Highlands in Cameroon to the Mambila Plateau in Taraba State is isolated from the main body of that forest to the south. The birding trips were undertaken between the 29th of December 2019 and 17th February 2023. On these trips, forest birds were observed including Chestnut-winged Starling Onichognathus fulgidus which is well known from the main forest belt in Nigeria but seen for the first time in these forests. A black paradise flycatcher which was similar to the enigmatic bird described by Yakhat Barshep in the African Bird Club Bulletin of 2020 was also seen. On this trip it was discovered that the forest still remaining in the area is fragmentary and under severe threat. It has exceptional ornithological importance with high probability of discovering new species and subspecies. This checklist contains 153 bird species recorded in these forest patches.Purpose
This data set contain bird species that illustrates the importance of the site and bird species of conservation concern. When collated with other data, this information will be provided to local communities and also the Government at both State and Federal levels to push for the conservation of these sites.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The data were collected in forest patches within Anwase.Sampling
The occurrence data was collected using a strategic random method where routes were walked slowly, and birds seen and heard recorded, with a significant amount of time spent on identifying rare and unusual bird sightings.Quality Control
The quality of this data set was assessed and reviewed by the lead author, Mark Hopkins, after using the following tools: Google Earth, IOC World bird list, and Borrow and Demey: Field Guide to birds of West Africa to make sure the data entered are accurate.Method steps
-
The following tools were used to review the data set:
Google Earth: Used to generate the location of the study area.
Open Refine: Used to check for double entries.
Encyclopedia of Life and IOC World Bird List: Used to check and confirm the current nomenclature of the birds
Borrow and Demey: Birds of western Africa: Used initially to identify the species on the field
Global Name resolver: Used to resolve conflicting scientific names.
GBIF species name matching: Used to confirm and match up names of the birds with the existing data set in GBIF.
Taxonomic Coverages
