During the "Advanced course in identification of species: Spider taxonomy and ecology" of the Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Master´s program at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki, the authors were teaching and learning spider identification, taxonomy, behaviour and sampling. The authors of this paper sampled four plots in mountain birch forest in Kilpisjärvi (Fig. 1). The plots sampled in this area are so far the northernmost and only plots sampled from the hemiarctic zone in a global spider diversity project (see http://biodiversityresearch.org/research/biogeography/). To produce high-quality data comparable to other sampling conducted under the global project, sampling was performed following the standardized COBRA – Conservation Oriented Biodiversity Rapid Assesment – protocol (Cardoso 2009). By following the protocol, it is ensured that this data can be re-used in multiple ways.Sampling Description
