The biological material was collected on board O/V “El Puma” from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, during the oceanographic expedition “Sedimento 4” carried out in February 2008. In the continental shelf of the Southern Mexican Pacific (16° 45’ – 17° 14’N; 99° 49’ – 101° 2’W), 38 stations between 42 m and 109 m depth were sampled using a Smith-McIntyre grab (0.1 m2). Samples were collected on soft bottoms, and 82 species belonging to 52 genera and 27 families of Polychaeta (Annelida) were identified. The stations were geo-referenced by the Global Positioning System (GPS) of the vessel and the environmental data of depth (m), temperature (°C), salinity (psu), dissolved oxygen (ml/L), nitrate (mmol/m3) and phosphate (mmol/m3) concentrations, organic carbon (%), sand and mud percentages were also evaluated at each station.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The samples were collected during the oceanographic expedition “Sedimento 4” on board the R/V “El Puma” of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), during February 2008. Thirty-eight stations between 42 m and 109 m depth were sampled on soft bottoms along the continental shelf of the Southern Mexican Pacific.Sampling
The geographic position of stations was determined with the Global Positioning System (GPS) of the vessel and depth with a Konsberg Simrad EM300 multibeam echosounder. The sediment grain size was determined with a Beckman Coulter laser diffraction particle sizing analyzer and classified according the Wentworth scale (Wentworth, 1922). The organic carbon percent was determined by the Walkley and Black (1934) acid digestion method. The temperature (°C) and salinity (psu) data were obtained from the GLOBAL_REANALYSIS_ PHY_001_030 (Fernández and Lellouch, 2018) published by the Copernicus Marine Monitoring Service with a temporary resolution of 24 hours. Reanalysis data for dissolved oxygen (ml/L), nitrate (mmol/m3) and phosphate (mmol/m3) concentrations were obtained from the GLOBAL_REANALYSIS_BIO_001_029 (Perruche, 2018) disseminated by the Copernicus Marine Monitoring Service with a temporary resolution of 24 hours.Method steps
- The sediment samples were collected with a Smith McIntyre grab (0.1 m2) and sieved through a 0.5 mm mesh to separate the macrofauna. The biological material was fixed with 10% formalin/seawater solution and preserved in ethanol 70%. The polychaetes were identified to species level, quantified, catalogued and deposited in the Colección Nacional de Anélidos Poliquetos from the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (CNAP-ICML, UNAM; DFE.IN.061.0598). The validity of the identified species names was verified with recent systematic reviews and with the World Polychaeta Database (Read and Fauchald, 2021).
