The basis of the mollusc collection of the Zoological Museum Amsterdam (ZMA) originates from the collection of the Royal Zoological Society 'Natura Artis Magistra' [Artis Zoo] founded in 1838. The collection was expanded with old Dutch18th and 19th century collections purchased at auctions, donations and single specimens bought from foreign shell dealers. In 1869 honorary curator Abraham Oltmans published a catalogue on Conidae with about 230 species. Prof. Max Weber, leading the Siboga Expedition in 1899-1900 to the Netherlands East Indies, added 3 new taxa to the collection. The curator Dr. Henny Coomans, followed by Robert Moolenbeek, produced many publications on Conidae and added many new species to the collection. In 2010, there were 210 primary and secondary types of Conidae recognized, the total collection consisted of more than 13.000 samples.Taxonomic Coverages
